AC Coil Cleaning: Why Your AC Struggles in a Sharjah Summer
If your AC runs all afternoon in a Sharjah summer and the rooms still feel warm, a dirty cooling coil is one of the most common reasons. AC coil cleaning removes the layer of dust and grime that stops the coil transferring heat, so the system can cool properly again. It also deals with the damp, dirty surface where musty smells and mould tend to start.
What is AC coil cleaning?
Every AC has two coils. The evaporator coil sits inside the indoor unit: warm room air passes over it, the refrigerant inside absorbs the heat, and cooled air is blown back into the room. The condenser coil sits in the outdoor unit and releases that heat outside.
Both coils are made of thin metal fins packed closely together. When dust, sand, lint or pet hair clogs those fins, air can't pass through easily and heat can't transfer properly. AC coil cleaning means removing that build-up, usually with a suitable coil cleaner and careful rinsing, while protecting the fins and the electrics.
Why coils struggle in a Sharjah summer
- The AC barely rests. Long running hours mean more air, and more dust, pass over the indoor coil.
- Fine dust and sand reach the outdoor coil easily, especially on balconies, roofs and ground-floor villa yards.
- Humidity. The indoor coil is constantly wet with condensation. Dust sticks to a wet surface and forms a grimy layer.
- High outdoor temperatures make it harder for the outdoor unit to shed heat, and a dirty condenser coil makes that worse.
Signs your AC coil needs cleaning
- Rooms take longer to cool, or never quite reach the set temperature.
- The AC runs almost constantly.
- Air from the vents feels less cold or weaker than it used to.
- A musty or damp smell when the AC starts.
- Water dripping from the indoor unit, which can mean a blocked drain tray as well as a dirty coil.
- Visible dirt or dark patches on the fins when you remove the filter.
- Higher electricity bills in summer than in previous years, with similar use.
Not every cooling problem is the coil. Low refrigerant, a faulty fan or an electrical fault can cause similar symptoms. If the coil is clean and the AC still doesn't cool, you need an AC technician for a mechanical check.
What a professional coil clean involves
- Power off and inspection. The unit is switched off and isolated, and the coil, filter and drain tray are checked.
- Protecting the area under and around the indoor unit.
- Applying a coil cleaner suitable for AC coils, which loosens dirt and grease between the fins.
- Rinsing carefully, with the water directed into the drain tray or collected, so it doesn't run onto electrics or ceilings.
- Drain tray and line cleared, so condensation drains freely and doesn't sit and grow mould.
- Outdoor coil cleaned of dust and sand, where access is safe.
- Filter cleaned or replaced, and the unit tested.
Coil cleaning and duct cleaning: how they fit together
The coil and the ducts are different parts of the same system. A clean coil helps the AC cool efficiently; clean ducts stop dust being blown into each room. If your home is dusty and the AC struggles, you'll usually want both done in the same visit. Our complete guide to AC duct cleaning explains the duct side, and our article on how often UAE homes need it and what it fixes covers timing.
When to book
The best time is before the hottest months, so the AC starts summer clean. Book sooner if you notice the signs above mid-season, after renovation work, or after a heavy dust storm. Homes with pets or allergies may need the coil checked more often.
Can you clean the coil yourself?
You can safely do the basics: switch off the AC, remove and wash or vacuum the filter, let it dry fully and refit it. Many split units let you see the front of the coil once the filter is out, and you can lightly vacuum loose dust with a soft brush attachment.
Deeper cleaning is best left to a professional. The fins bend easily, water near electrics is a risk, and in ducted systems the coil is often above a false ceiling. Never mix cleaning products, and don't spray household cleaners into the unit.
Choosing an AC coil cleaning company
- Ask whether the drain tray and outdoor coil are included.
- Ask what product is used and whether it's suitable for homes with children and pets.
- Ask how they protect the ceiling and electrics while rinsing.
- Ask for before-and-after photos of the coil.
