Dog Sitting at Home vs Kennels: What's Better for Your Dog?
For most dogs, being looked after at home by a sitter is less stressful than a stay in kennels, because they keep their own bed, smells and routine. Kennels can still be the better choice for dogs that hate being alone or need company around the clock. Dog pet sitting at home and boarding both work well when they're matched to the dog, so the real question is which suits yours.
The two options explained
Pet sitting at home
A carer visits your home at set times, or stays overnight, to feed your dog, refresh water, give medication, walk and play. Your dog stays in its own space and sees one familiar person.
Kennels and pet boarding
Your dog moves to a boarding facility for the length of your trip. Staff care for it alongside other dogs, with set feeding, exercise and rest times.
Pet sitter vs kennel: side by side
| Factor | Dog sitting at home | Kennels / boarding |
|---|---|---|
| Environment | Familiar home, own bed and smells | New place, new sounds and smells |
| Contact with other dogs | Little or none | Regular, depending on the facility |
| Routine | Your routine, followed as written | The facility's schedule |
| Company | During visits, or overnight if booked | Staff on site for longer hours |
| Travel | None | A car journey each way |
| One-to-one attention | Full attention during each visit | Shared with other dogs |
| Home security | Someone checks the home regularly | Home is left empty |
When home sitting is the better choice
- Older dogs. Senior dogs often find new places confusing and tiring, and may have medication or mobility needs that are easier to manage at home.
- Anxious dogs. A dog that's unsettled by noise, other dogs or strangers usually copes better in its own home.
- Dogs on special diets or medication. A sitter follows your exact instructions with your food and your supplies.
- Multi-pet homes. If you also have a cat or small animals, one sitter can care for everyone in one place.
- Summer trips. In the UAE heat, avoiding a car journey to a facility is one less risk.
- Dogs that don't mix well. Reactive dogs avoid the stress of being near unfamiliar dogs all day.
When kennels may suit better
- Dogs with separation anxiety. A dog that becomes distressed after a few hours alone may need someone present for most of the day. Overnight home sitting can help, but if that's not enough, a well-run boarding facility with staff on site may be kinder.
- Very social young dogs. Some energetic dogs enjoy supervised play with others.
- Homes that are hard to access, where daily visits aren't practical.
If you choose boarding, visit the facility first. Look at cleanliness, shade and cooling, how dogs are grouped, and how often they're taken out.
Pet sitting vs pet boarding: the questions to ask
- How long can my dog comfortably be alone? Be honest about this; it decides how many visits or whether you need overnight care.
- How does my dog react to other dogs and to new places?
- Does my dog need medication, a special diet or help with mobility?
- Is it summer? How will walks be timed around the heat?
- How will I get updates, and how often?
- What happens in an emergency, and who takes my dog to the vet?
Try it before a long trip. Book a single day or weekend of home sitting first. You'll see how your dog copes and how the updates work, and your dog gets to know the carer.
Making home sitting work for your dog
- Book enough visits. Most dogs need at least a morning and an evening walk, and many do better with a midday check.
- Ask for walks at the cooler hours of the day, especially from late spring to autumn.
- Leave your dog's routine in writing, with feeding amounts, medication and any triggers on walks.
- Make sure the AC is serviced and set before you go.
- Leave a familiar item, such as an unwashed T-shirt, in your dog's bed.
Grooming before or after you travel
Many owners book a groom just before a trip so the coat is clean and mat-free while they're away, or just after to freshen up. A groom at home avoids another outing; our guide to what a full dog groom at home includes explains the steps, and home grooming versus a salon compares the two options.
