Post-Construction Cleaning Checklist: Dust, Paint and Grout
A post-construction cleaning checklist helps you clean, or check a cleaning team's work, after building or renovation work, so nothing is missed before you move in. The three big jobs are removing fine dust from every surface, getting paint specks and overspray off glass and fittings, and clearing grout and cement haze from tiles. This checklist is grouped by stage and by room, so you can use it as a template for a DIY clean or for your handover walk-through.
Stage 1: before cleaning starts
- All trades finished, including snagging fixes and paint touch-ups
- Builders' waste, offcuts and packaging removed by the contractor
- Water and electricity working
- Windows opened for ventilation; dust masks and gloves ready if cleaning yourself
- Protective films still on? Note which ones need removing
- Floor types noted: marble, porcelain, wood, so the right products are used
Test before you treat. Try every product and tool on a small, hidden area first. Acidic grout-haze removers can etch marble and natural stone, and the wrong scraper will scratch glass.
Stage 2: dust removal, top to bottom
- Ceilings, cornices and corners dusted
- Light fittings, spotlights and ceiling fans dusted (power off)
- AC grilles and vents vacuumed and wiped
- Tops of doors, frames, wardrobes and high shelves
- Walls dusted or lightly wiped
- Switches and sockets wiped with a barely damp cloth (power off)
- Inside every cupboard, drawer and wardrobe vacuumed, then wiped
- Window sills and sliding tracks vacuumed
- Skirting boards vacuumed and wiped
- Floors vacuumed thoroughly before any wet mopping
Stage 3: paint, adhesive and film removal
- Paint specks and overspray removed from window glass
- Paint removed from window and door frames, handles and hinges
- Paint drips removed from floors and skirting
- Paint marks cleaned from switches, sockets and fittings
- Protective films peeled from glass, frames and appliances
- Sticker and label residue removed from sanitary ware, glass and appliances
- Silicone smears cleaned from tiles, basins, baths and shower trays
- Adhesive and tape marks removed from floors and worktops
Stage 4: grout and tile haze
- Grout haze cleaned from floor tiles
- Grout haze cleaned from wall tiles and splashbacks
- Cement or mortar spots removed from tiles and thresholds
- Grout lines cleaned and checked for gaps
- Marble and natural stone cleaned only with pH-neutral or stone-safe products
Stage 5: room-by-room detail
Kitchen
- Cabinets inside and out, including hinges and handles
- Worktops, splashback and sink
- Hob, hood and oven (inside, if newly installed with packaging dust)
- Fridge, dishwasher and other appliances inside and out
- Plinths and the floor under appliances
Bathrooms
- Toilet, basin, bath and shower cleaned and sanitised
- Shower glass free of haze, silicone and stickers
- Taps, shower heads and fittings polished
- Mirrors and cabinets inside and out
- Drains checked and cleared of debris
- Extractor fan cover dusted
Bedrooms and living areas
- Wardrobes and built-in units inside and out
- Doors, frames and handles
- Floors cleaned edge to edge
Windows, balconies and outdoors
- Glass inside and, where safely reachable, outside
- Frames, seals, sills and tracks
- Balcony floor, glass and railings; drain outlet clear
- For villas: terraces, steps, entrance and garage swept and washed
Stage 6: final pass
- Wait a few hours, or until the next day, for airborne dust to settle
- Wipe all horizontal surfaces again
- Final vacuum and mop of all floors
- Check AC filters; clean or replace if dusty
- Run taps and flush toilets to clear the pipes
Handover walk-through checks
- Look at glass in daylight and from an angle for streaks and paint specks
- Run a finger along door tops, shelves and frames
- Open every cupboard and drawer
- Check corners and floor edges, not just the middle of the room
- Check tiles from a low angle for haze
- Photograph anything that needs another pass
Using a post-construction cleaning checklist with a cleaning company
Share the checklist when you ask for a quote, so the scope matches what you expect, and use it again at handover. Our guide to hiring a post-construction cleaning company covers the questions to ask before you book. If the property is new and you're about to move in, the post-construction clean also does the job of a move-in clean. And if you're leaving a rented home at the same time, see move-out cleaning in Sharjah.
Tip Top offers post-construction cleaning, working to written room-by-room checklists with the work inspected before handover. The price depends on the property size, the amount of dust and residue and the extras needed, and we confirm it after a free on-site or photo-based assessment.
