Dog Grooming Prices: How Breed, Coat and Size Change the Cost

· 3 min read · By the Tip Top team

Three dogs of different sizes and coats, a poodle, a labrador and a husky, sitting together in a bright room

The dog grooming price you're quoted depends mainly on your dog's size, breed and coat, plus the condition the coat is in on the day. A small short-haired dog needing a bath, nails and ears takes far less time than a large double-coated dog that needs a full de-shed, or a poodle cross with mats. That's why most groomers price by dog and coat, and confirm the final price once they've seen your dog.

Why there's no single price for dog grooming

Grooming is priced mostly on time and difficulty. Two dogs booked for the same "full groom" can take very different amounts of work. Brushing, bathing and drying a thick coat takes much longer than a short one, and a dog that's anxious or wriggly may need a slower pace with breaks. A fair price reflects the actual work your dog needs.

What changes the cost

Size

Larger dogs have more coat to wash, dry and brush, and take more effort to handle safely. Size is usually the first thing a groomer asks about.

Coat condition

Matting is one of the biggest factors. Mats have to be worked out slowly to avoid hurting the skin, and heavy matting adds a lot of time. Dogs groomed regularly are quicker, and often cheaper, to groom each time.

Temperament and health

Nervous, elderly or reactive dogs may need extra time, gentler handling and breaks. Dogs with skin conditions or mobility problems may need special care. Tell the groomer about these when you ask for a price.

What's included

Check whether the price covers the full groom (bath, brush, nails and ears) or only part of it, and whether de-matting, de-shedding or trims are extra.

Number of dogs

Booking several dogs in one visit is often more efficient than separate appointments.

Home grooming vs salon pricing

At-home grooming saves you the journey and the waiting, and your dog gets one-to-one attention in a familiar space. A salon has fixed equipment and may group several dogs. When comparing, look at what's included and how much time is set aside for your dog, not just the headline figure.

Reading a dog grooming price list

A dog grooming price list is a useful starting point, but treat it as a guide rather than a final bill. Before you book, check:

  • How "small", "medium" and "large" are defined
  • Whether the price assumes a coat in good condition
  • What happens if your dog is more matted than expected
  • Which services are included and which cost extra
  • The products used and whether they suit sensitive skin

The cheapest option isn't always the best value. A rushed groom, poor drying or rough handling can leave your dog uncomfortable, and put it off grooming next time.

Get an accurate quote: send the groomer your dog's breed, weight, age and a few clear photos of the coat, including any tangles. Mention any health issues or behaviour concerns.

How to keep grooming costs down

  • Brush at home between grooms. Fewer mats mean less time on the table.
  • Stick to a regular schedule. A coat kept in good condition is faster to groom.
  • Check paws and coat after walks. Removing sand, burrs and debris early stops it becoming a tangle. It's also a good moment to look for parasites; see our guide to checking dogs for ticks in the UAE.
  • Get your dog used to handling. Touching paws, ears and mouth at home makes grooming easier and calmer.

What pet grooming costs beyond the groom

When working out what pet grooming costs over a year, include the brushes and combs you use at home, and any vet-recommended skin or parasite care. If you travel, pet sitting is another regular cost; our guide to pet sitting rates in the UAE explains what affects it.
