What Is AC Duct Cleaning? A Plain-English Explainer

A clean ceiling AC vent and fresh airflow in a bright, minimal living room

What is AC duct cleaning? It's the removal of dust, sand, lint, pet hair and other debris from the hidden channels, called ducts, that carry cooled air from your AC unit to each room. A proper job also cleans the vents you can see and the parts of the unit where dirt and moisture collect. The aim is simple: cleaner air coming out of the vents, and an AC that doesn't have to push through a layer of dust.

What are AC ducts?

If your home has grilles or round diffusers in the ceiling, and no AC unit on the wall of that room, your air conditioning almost certainly uses ducts. The indoor unit sits somewhere out of sight, often above a false ceiling in a corridor, in a cupboard or in a roof space. It cools the air, and a network of ducts, usually flexible or metal tubes, carries that air to the grilles in each room. Another grille, the return, draws room air back to the unit to be cooled again.

Wall-mounted split units and window units don't have ducts. They still need cleaning, but "duct cleaning" doesn't apply to them.

Why do ducts get dirty?

The AC pulls in room air, and with it whatever is floating around: dust, fine sand, fibres from clothes and furniture, pet hair and dander, and cooking residue. The filter catches some of it, but not all. Over months, a layer builds up on the inside of the ducts. In the UAE, where the AC runs for much of the year and fine dust gets everywhere, that build-up happens faster. Humidity adds moisture, and where dust and moisture meet, mould can grow.

What is AC duct cleaning in practice?

  1. A look first. The technician checks the unit, filter and some of the ducts to see how dirty they are.
  2. Protecting your home. Floors and furniture under the vents are covered.
  3. Loosening the dust. Brushes or air tools are passed through the ducts to shake the dirt off the inside walls.
  4. Sucking it out. A powerful vacuum pulls the loosened dirt out of the system, so it doesn't land in your room.
  5. Washing the grilles. The vents are taken down, washed and put back.
  6. Cleaning the unit. The filter, cooling coil and drain tray are cleaned so the AC works well and water drains away.
  7. Sanitising if needed. If there's mould or a bad smell, a suitable sanitiser may be used.
  8. Showing you the result. Before-and-after photos show what was removed.

What it isn't

  • It isn't an AC repair. It won't fix low gas, a broken fan or an electrical fault. That's a job for an AC technician.
  • It isn't just wiping the vents. Clean grilles look nice, but the dust inside the ducts stays put unless it's extracted.
  • It isn't air freshener. Spraying fragrance into the system covers smells; it doesn't remove what causes them.

How long does AC duct cleaning take?

It depends on three things: how many indoor units and vents you have, how dirty the system is, and how easy the units are to reach. A small apartment with one unit and a few grilles is a much shorter job than a large villa with several systems across two floors. Ask for an estimated time when you get your quote. A good company sizes the team so the work is finished in one visit, and you can usually stay at home while it's done, keeping out of the room being worked on.

Duct cleaning and coil cleaning: a quick note

People often mention them together. Duct cleaning deals with the channels carrying air to each room; coil cleaning deals with the cooling coil inside the unit. A dirty coil makes the AC struggle to cool and is a common source of musty smells. Most homes benefit from both in the same visit. Our article on AC coil cleaning in a Sharjah summer explains the coil side.

The simplest thing you can do yourself is keep the filter clean. Switch the AC off, remove the filter, vacuum or wash it as the manufacturer recommends, let it dry fully and refit it. It won't clean the ducts, but it slows down how quickly they get dirty again.

Do you need it?

It's worth considering if dust settles quickly near the vents, you see dark marks around the grilles, the AC smells musty when it starts, or you've just moved in and don't know when it was last done.
