Why Does My AC Smell? Common Causes and Fixes
An AC smell usually points to one of a few causes: a musty smell from moisture and mould on the coil or in the drain tray, a dusty or burning smell from dirt or an electrical problem, a sewage smell from the drain line, or an odour carried in from elsewhere in the home. Most musty and dusty smells are fixed by cleaning the filter, coil, drain tray and ducts. A burning or gas-like smell is different: switch off and get help.
Musty, damp or "old socks" smell
Likely cause: moisture and mould. In a humid climate, the indoor coil and drain tray stay wet for long periods. Dust settles on them and mould can grow, especially if the drain is partly blocked. The smell is often strongest when the AC first switches on.
What to do:
- Switch off and clean the filter, letting it dry fully before refitting.
- Check for drips or damp patches near the indoor unit, which suggest a drainage problem.
- Book a professional coil, drain tray and duct clean if the smell persists.
If you can see dark spots on grilles or the unit, read our guide to what AC duct cleaning involves and ask for mould treatment to be included.
Dusty smell when the AC starts
Likely cause: dust burning off or being blown out after a period of not running, or a dirty filter and ducts. It's common when you switch the AC on after a trip.
What to do: if the smell fades within a few minutes, it's usually just settled dust. Clean the filter. If it comes back every time, or the home gets dusty quickly near the vents, the ducts probably need cleaning.
Burning or electrical smell
Likely cause: an electrical fault, an overheating motor or a wiring problem.
Switch off the AC at the isolator or breaker if it's safe to do so, and don't run it again until an AC technician has checked it. If you see smoke or sparks, leave the area and call the emergency services. A burning smell is not a cleaning issue.
Rotten egg or gas smell
Likely cause: this is not normally caused by the AC. A smell of gas could mean a cooking gas leak elsewhere in the home, with the AC simply moving the air around.
What to do: don't switch electrical appliances on or off, open windows if it's safe, leave the property and call the emergency services or your gas supplier from outside.
Sewage or drain smell
Likely cause: in some installations, the AC condensate drain connects to the building's drainage. If a trap dries out or a connection is faulty, sewer smells can be drawn back into the unit. A clogged drain tray with standing water can also smell foul.
What to do: ask a professional to clean the drain tray and line and check the connection. If you're in an apartment, tell your building management, since the drain may connect to shared pipework.
Vinegar or sour smell
Likely cause: often mould or bacteria in the drain tray or on the coil. Less commonly, it can relate to an electrical component overheating.
What to do: book a coil and drain tray clean. If the smell continues after cleaning, ask an AC technician to check the electrics.
Smell of something dead
Likely cause: occasionally, a small animal or insects get into ducts, the unit or the ceiling space around it.
What to do: switch off the AC and have the unit and ducts inspected. If there's a pest problem, a pest control assessment can deal with the cause, and the ducts may need cleaning and sanitising afterwards.
Smoke, pet or cooking odours
Likely cause: ducts, filters and dust inside the system absorb household odours over time and release them when the AC runs. Homes with smokers, pets or a lot of cooking notice this most.
What to do: clean the filter more often, and consider a duct clean. Treat the source as well: soft furnishings and carpets hold odours too.
Quick guide to AC smells
| Smell | Likely cause | First step |
|---|---|---|
| Musty or damp | Moisture and mould on coil or tray | Filter clean, then coil and duct clean |
| Dusty at start-up | Settled dust, dirty filter or ducts | Filter clean; duct clean if it persists |
| Burning | Electrical or motor fault | Switch off; call an AC technician |
| Rotten egg or gas | Possible gas leak elsewhere | Leave and call for help from outside |
| Sewage | Drain trap or connection issue | Drain tray and line check |
| Something dead | Animal or pests in ducts | Inspection; pest control if needed |
| Smoke, pets, cooking | Odours absorbed in the system | Filter and duct clean |
Don't cover the smell
Spraying air freshener into the vents or the unit masks the smell for a short while but doesn't remove the cause, and adds chemicals to the air. Never mix cleaning products, and don't spray household cleaners into the AC.
