House Cleaning Checklist: Daily, Weekly and Monthly Tasks

· 3 min read · By the Tip Top team

A weekly cleaning planner on a fridge door in a tidy modern kitchen

A good house cleaning checklist splits the work into daily, weekly and monthly tasks, so nothing builds up and no single day takes hours. Daily jobs keep the kitchen and living spaces usable, weekly jobs cover bathrooms, floors and dusting, and monthly jobs catch the places that collect dust and grime more slowly. Below is a practical routine for a Sharjah apartment or villa, with a few extra steps for sand, hard water and year-round AC.

Daily cleaning tasks

Ten to twenty minutes a day stops the home sliding. Focus on the kitchen and anything that becomes harder to clean if left.

  • Wash dishes or load and run the dishwasher
  • Wipe kitchen worktops and the hob after cooking, while grease is still soft
  • Rinse and wipe the sink
  • Empty kitchen bins when full, especially in the heat
  • Quick tidy of living areas: put things back where they belong
  • Squeegee the shower glass after use to slow limescale
  • Hang towels to dry and open the bathroom door or run the fan
  • Sweep or vacuum the entrance if sand is coming in
  • In pet homes: scoop litter and wipe feeding areas

Weekly cleaning tasks

Pick one or two days a week, or spread these out a few at a time.

Kitchen

  • Wipe appliance fronts, cabinet handles and the splashback
  • Clean the microwave inside
  • Check the fridge and throw out old food
  • Mop the floor

Bathrooms

  • Clean the toilet, basin, bath or shower
  • Wipe taps and fittings dry to prevent limescale
  • Clean mirrors
  • Wash the floor and empty the bin
  • Wash bathmats and towels

Whole home

  • Dust reachable surfaces, shelves and electronics
  • Vacuum floors, rugs and the sofa
  • Mop hard floors
  • Change bed linen
  • Sweep the balcony
  • Wipe light switches and door handles

Monthly cleaning tasks

These take longer but only need doing once a month or so.

  • Wash or check AC filters, which collect dust fast when the AC runs every day
  • Wipe AC grilles and vents
  • Dust skirting boards, door frames and the tops of doors
  • Vacuum window and sliding door tracks, then wipe them
  • Wipe interior windows and sills
  • Clean inside the fridge
  • Soak and wash the cooker hood filters
  • Descale taps, shower heads and the kettle
  • Scrub bathroom grout
  • Vacuum under beds and sofas, moving light furniture
  • Vacuum the mattress and wash pillows if the label allows
  • Wash the balcony floor and wipe railings
  • Wash bins

Make it manageable: rather than doing every monthly task on one day, do two or three each week. By the end of the month, they're all done and no weekend is lost to cleaning.

Seasonal and occasional tasks

Some jobs come round only a few times a year:

  • A full deep clean every few months, covering limescale, grease, high surfaces and inside cupboards
  • Sofa, carpet, mattress and curtain cleaning, which need professional equipment for a thorough job
  • AC duct and coil cleaning, often before the hottest months
  • A big clear-out of wardrobes and storage

After a dust storm, you may need to bring some monthly tasks forward. Our guide on how to reduce dust in the house covers what to do.

Tips for UAE homes

  • Keep sand at the door. A good mat inside and out, and shoes off at the entrance, cut down on daily sweeping.
  • Dry, don't just rinse. Drying taps, sinks and glass after use is the easiest way to keep hard water marks away. See our guide to hard water stains for marks that are already there.
  • Use a damp microfibre cloth for dusting, which traps fine dust instead of spreading it.
  • Ventilate bathrooms after every shower to keep mould away.
  • Choose gentle products if you have children or pets, and never mix cleaning products.

When a checklist isn't enough

If you've fallen behind, starting a routine on top of months of build-up is hard work. A deep clean resets the home so your daily and weekly routine can keep it there. For what a professional visit covers, see our guide to house cleaning services in Sharjah.
