On-Site Curtain Cleaning: How It Works Without Taking Curtains Down

· 4 min read · By the Tip Top team

A technician steam cleaning long hanging curtains in place in a bright living room

On-site curtain cleaning means your curtains are cleaned while they're still hanging, using specialised low-moisture or extraction equipment, so there's no taking them down, no rehanging and no days of bare windows. It suits most heavy drapes, blackout and lined curtains, and is a practical answer to the dust that builds up on curtains in UAE homes.

Why curtains need cleaning more often than you think

Curtains hang right where air moves: next to windows, often beside AC vents. In Sharjah, fine dust and sand that get in around window frames and sliding doors settle into the folds. Cooking smells, smoke and humidity are absorbed too. Because curtains don't look obviously dirty from across the room, they're often left for years.

Signs your curtains are due a clean:

  • Dust puffs out when you draw them
  • The leading edges, where hands touch, look darker
  • The hem or the side facing the window is grey or faded
  • A musty smell, especially in a room near the kitchen or bathroom
  • Allergy symptoms that feel worse in one room

How on-site curtain cleaning works

  1. Fabric check. The technician looks at the fabric, lining and any care labels to decide how much moisture the curtains can take.
  2. Protecting the area. Floors, furniture and window sills below are covered or cleared.
  3. Dry vacuuming. The curtains are vacuumed from top to bottom with a soft upholstery tool to remove loose dust before any cleaning solution is used.
  4. Spot treatment. Marks on edges and hems are pre-treated.
  5. Cleaning in place. A handheld tool applies a cleaning solution and extracts it immediately, working in sections from the top down. The fabric is cleaned without being soaked.
  6. Drying. The curtains are left open and spread out so air can move through the folds. Running the AC or a fan helps.

It's similar to the extraction method used on sofas and carpets, adapted for fabric that hangs. If you're curious how methods change from one fabric to another, see our guide to upholstery cleaning methods and fabric codes.

Which curtains can be cleaned on site?

  • Usually suitable: heavy drapes, lined and interlined curtains, blackout curtains, pinch-pleat and eyelet curtains, and most synthetic blends.
  • Take extra care with: silk, velvet and some natural fibres, which can water-mark. These need a low-moisture approach and a test on a hidden area first.
  • Often better washed: light sheers and voiles labelled as machine washable. They're easy to take down and usually wash well on a gentle cycle.
  • Check first: curtains with sun damage. Fabric that has been weakened by strong UAE sun can tear, and faded areas won't regain their colour.

Check the label. If your curtains have a care label, keep it handy for the technician. "Dry clean only" fabrics may still be suitable for careful low-moisture cleaning on site, but it should be tested first.

How long do curtains take to dry?

Because the fabric is cleaned and extracted rather than soaked, curtains are left only slightly damp. Drying time depends on the fabric weight, the lining and the airflow in the room. Keep them open and spread out, run the AC, and avoid drawing them closed until they're dry, so the folds don't stay damp.

Curtain cleaning for homes and offices

On-site cleaning is useful anywhere with large or high windows: villas with double-height living rooms, apartments with floor-to-ceiling glass, and offices, clinics and restaurants where taking curtains down would mean closing a room. Pairing it with window cleaning makes sense, since clean curtains against dusty glass don't stay clean for long.

What curtain cleaning costs

Curtain cleaning prices depend on the number of panels, their size and drop, the fabric and lining, how soiled they are, and access (very high windows may need extra equipment). At Tip Top, curtain cleaning is part of our upholstery and specialised cleaning service, and we confirm the price after a free on-site or photo-based assessment. If you're also pricing up rugs, our guide to carpet cleaning cost explains how those quotes work.

Keeping curtains fresh between cleans

  • Vacuum curtains every few weeks with a soft brush attachment, top to bottom.
  • Give them a gentle shake when you open them.
  • Keep AC filters clean so less dust is blown towards the windows.
  • Open curtains on dry days to air the fabric.
  • Clean them when you clean soft furnishings like sofas and mattresses, so the whole room is fresh at once.
