Professional Mattress Cleaning: Dust Mites, Stains and Drying Time
You spend around a third of your life on your mattress, but it's one of the things in the home that almost never gets cleaned. Sheets get washed; the mattress underneath slowly collects sweat, skin flakes, dust and, in many homes, the occasional pet or child accident. Professional mattress cleaning deals with what you can't reach with a vacuum and a sponge.
What builds up in a mattress
- Dust mites. Microscopic creatures that feed on shed skin and thrive in warm, humid bedding. Their droppings are a common trigger for allergies and asthma. Read more about dust mites in UAE homes.
- Sweat and body oils, which cause yellow marks and stale smells over time.
- Dust and sand. In the UAE, fine dust settles everywhere, including into fabric.
- Stains from spills, nosebleeds, period accidents, bedwetting and pets.
What professional mattress cleaning involves
- Inspection of the fabric and any stains, to choose the right method.
- High-powered vacuuming to lift dust, debris and mite allergens from deep in the surface.
- Stain treatment with products matched to the stain: protein stains like sweat and urine need a different approach from oil or drink stains.
- Deep extraction cleaning, where a cleaning solution is worked into the fabric and then extracted, pulling dirt out rather than pushing it further in.
- Odour treatment where needed, especially in pet homes.
The same extraction method is used for sofas, carpets and curtains, so many people book them together.
How long does a mattress take to dry?
Drying time depends on the method, the mattress and the room's airflow. Extraction removes most of the moisture, and the mattress is left slightly damp rather than wet. To help it dry:
- Run the AC or a fan and keep the room ventilated.
- Leave the mattress uncovered until it's completely dry before putting sheets back on.
- Book in the morning, so it has the day to dry before bedtime.
Ask the team for the expected drying time for your mattress before they start.
Can every stain be removed?
Many stains lift well, especially if they're treated soon. Older stains that have set into the fabric, or have reached the foam underneath, may fade rather than disappear completely. A good cleaner will tell you honestly what to expect before starting.
Pet homes
If your dog or cat sleeps on the bed, the mattress collects hair, dander and the odd accident. Urine is the hardest: if it's only cleaned on the surface, the smell comes back. Professional extraction with odour treatment reaches further into the fabric. Tip Top cleans pet homes every day and prices pet-odour treatment per item. Clean or replace?
Cleaning makes sense when the mattress is still supportive and comfortable but looks or smells tired. Consider replacing it if:
- it sags, or you wake up stiff or sore
- there's mould, which usually means moisture has got deep into the core
- there's a bed bug infestation (that needs pest control first; ask about treatment before deciding)
- it's damaged beyond surface stains
Keeping it clean between professional cleans
- Use a washable mattress protector and wash it with your bedding.
- Vacuum the mattress when you change the sheets.
- Air the bed before making it, so moisture can escape.
- Rotate the mattress as the manufacturer recommends.
What it costs
Mattress cleaning is priced per item, depending on size and condition. At Tip Top we confirm the price after a quick assessment. You can add mattress cleaning to any deep clean, or book it on its own alongside sofa and carpet cleaning.
